healthy struggle

A long time ago I attempted homemade graham crackers. I thought they were decent tasting, however Cam wasn't a fan. Lately I have been frustrated with myself for the amount of crackers I have been giving the kids. I like to have something in the car that I can quickly get to, hand back to the kids, and keep them content. It's nice to also have something in my backpack in case they get hungry while we are out. I typically keep graham crackers or animal crackers on hand. However I realized that while this isn't candy, it's really not healthy at all. I know fruit is always a good snack, but I like to have something I always keep on hand and doesn't rot after one day.

So today I attempted to make my own crackers using this recipe. Cam tolerates them, but they are SO dense. It makes it difficult for my 4.5 toothed Kendall to chew them easily. I just find it hard to make anything homemade that has that flaky, easily chewable texture. I would love to find a store bought cracker that is healthy...meaning not a regular cracker that they stuffed a few whole grains in and slapped a "healthy" label on it. I want REALLY good for you. Maybe I just need to keep up my hunt.

Are rice cakes sorta healthy? I really like raisins as a snack - though they might be harder in the car.... maybe in one of those kid-grabby containers??

Or what about healthy homemade granola bars. IS there such a thing? Healthy muffins, but I guess they'd be crumbly in the car. We get pretzels that have sesame seeds rather than salt. (Though, yeah not super healthy.) What about dried fruit??

Have you seen the Brothers All Natural Fruit Crisps at Costco (or online at http://www.brothersallnatural.com/)? They are a great go to snack in the car or anywhere. Mia and Daniel love them. Downside-you pay a pretty penny for the quality and convenience.

We love the fruit crisps! They stay great, pack easy, and every kid I know loves them. They have 1 1/2 servings of fruit in each bag. Warning: the strawberries and banana one can get a little messy with the strawberry flakes. =)

Also, I'm wondering if Trader Joe might have some healthy crackers. And how about the (Mozarella) cheese sticks at Costco?

Nuts, home made granola, home made fruit leathers(like fruit roll ups but good for you)the dried fruits in the bags at costco(its like the fruit bits by gerber but bigger) craisins, raisins, cheerios, organic grahm bunnies the list goes on and on but here most days its either goldfish or teddy grahms.

Hey, Kelly,

Have you looked at the ingredients for these crackers? My mom buys them all the time, and they are good. They have the "crunchy" wheat pieces, so I assume that they must be somewhat healthy, but I don't know for sure. I think that she buys them at Staters, but I also think that I've seen them at Costco.

I do believe that they are expensive, though. (The on-line price is for a case of 12.
