any and every idea welcome...

A friend of mine recently went back to work after having her child several months ago (she is a teacher). She would really like to stay at home, however a big hurdle for her and her husband would be the health benefits. Unfortunately if she were to quit, they would have to pay for them out of pocket, which can be super expensive.

We both have been brainstorming as to things she could do from home that would not only bring in a few hundred dollars a month (at least) but also allow her to stay at home, which she really would like to do.

Anyway, if you read this blog and have ANY ideas that either you are doing or have heard of other people doing, please leave me a comment so I can pass along any new ideas that maybe we haven't thought of. ANY ideas are welcome!!

Isn't that most Mom's dream? Stay at home and make money while you're doing it?

Would like some ideas as well!!

Yes it is! I think the main difference with my friend is that her goal isn't to make a full salary, just a few hundred more to help with health insurance... :)

Hi Kelly,

I was given a wonderful book called _Women Leaving the Workplace_ by Larry Burkett. There is an appendix in it that contains a lot of great ideas for exactly this purpose! If your friend lives in the area, I wouldn't mind lending it to her, but I would want it back.

Here are some things that my friends do or have done:

--Sales (Gold Canyon Candles, Cookie Lee, Avon, Mary Kay, Pampered Chef, etc.)

--In-home daycare (either a licensed daycare provider or just watching a friend or relative's child)

--Medical transcription (this was a nice one because you can do it any hour of the day as long as you meet the deadline...however, I think it is a pretty stressful job as well)

--Making crafts and selling them

--Baking (My friend who did this had never done much before, but she took a class at Joann's or Michael's about cake decorating and then started a dessert business. She ended up being a wonderful baker, and her favorite thing was decorating elaborate cupcakes.)

--Hair cutting.

--Scanning other people's pictures and/or slides and converting them into digital format.

--Videography and/or photography.

--Tutoring.

I hope that she is able to find a way to stay home and make some money!

P.S. Also, we use Blue Cross Tonik for J and D's health insurance. The monthly fee isn't too terrible, and the co-pay is only $40 for the doctor. The only downside is that immunizations are NOT covered by the $40 co-pay, so we just don't get them at the doctor's office. It is more of a hassle to go to public health/immunization clinics, but it's only $15 for the shots instead of $100 each.

Hi Kelly...it's Jill from Seattle...Kristen Dacey's friend. I don't know about health care in California, but I do know in Washington individual health care isn't bad at all. I used to sell health insurance and individual coverage has greatly improved with options to choose from and good coverage. Since my husband rarely goes to the doctor he was on a seprate plan that was catastrophic and Max and I were on a plan and is was as good as my insurance when I was working. Have her look into it...it's worth a shot and might be a nice surprise!

Also, I used to sale Southern Living at Home and they have great products. It is sales, but it was fun. Got a lot of great homes decor for free and still use it do decorate my home. Just a thought.

Hi Kelly - Something that has helped us financially so that I can be at home is house-cleaning. I only do a few people's homes that I know decently from church (so that it doesn't seem as gross or awkward =). I can bring my son with me and his toys and pack and play for naps, or do it another day that my husband is home and can be with him. Just a few hours a week per house brings in decent money and there are so many other working moms out there that are willing to pay for some extra house cleaning because they are so busy themselves. It has been a huge blessing to us and though it isn't the most fun job in the world, it pays well!

On a side note - it is always nice to check in here - glad you guys are well! =)
